Welcome to the Seorae Global Village Center
Greetings. Thank you for your interest in our activities and programs. As we are entering a new year, we would like to re-instate some of our rules and regulations related to the programs offered at our center:
- Personal information that is collected to participate in the monthly programs (name, phone number, emails, nationality, visa type, address (-gu)) will only be used for the purpose of running our programs and will not be disclosed to third parties without your consent.
- Group activities are recorded either as still images or videos for the purpose of internal record keeping and to use as our promotional material. The center reserves the right to these images. If you do not wish to appear in photos nor in videos, kindly inform the staff before joining an activity so that we may edit the images accordingly.
- If you register for an activity, kindly confirm your attendance and if any payment is required to participate, arrange to make the payment for any reservation / material fee by the deadline mentioned in the confirmation email (typically one week in advance).
- If you have registered for a class and paid but can no longer attend, kindly arrange for someone to take your place if the class involves food ingredients or craft supplies. Alternatively, you can arrange for your ‘kit’ to be collected within 24 hours of the class.
- Payment or reimbursement request on the day of the class will no longer be accepted. This is to prevent no-shows occurring.
- Classes that are running longer than one session per month such as the Minhwa and the Hanji classes, the class fee is for the total number of sessions offered and published in the newsletter. Request for partial payment or discounts for missed sessions will no longer be accepted.
- Participants that sign up with no follow-on action for multiple occasions will be restricted from joining our classes in the future.
- Should you wish to stop receiving these monthly newsletters, please write us an email to seorae@seoul.go.kr.
Rules pertaining to Korean classes are stated separately in the class participation rules and in your confirmation emails. Please ask a staff for a hard copy of it if needed. We hope to have your support in our operational efforts and look forward to seeing you again soon. Happy New Year!

Step into the world of Minhwa, a cherished form of Korean traditional painting, renowned for its bold black lines, vivid colors, and imaginative layouts. Minhwa reflects the wit, humor, and resilience of Korean culture, bringing to life tales of love, scholarship, and nature's beauty—flowers, animals, and mythical creatures interwoven with symbolic meaning.
This month, we invite you to a special Minhwa Discovery Class—a two-session workshop perfect for both beginners and enthusiasts. Together, we will explore the essence of Minhwa and create a unique artwork symbolizing good fortune and blessings for the New Year. Join us to experience the harmony of tradition and creativity and take home a meaningful piece of art to celebrate the year ahead. |

Korean Cooking Class
Menu of this month:
Japchae(stir-fried glass noodles and vegetable) & Five colored skewer pancake
On January 17th 2025 (Friday), to go with the mood of the lunar new year ‘Seollal’ festivities, we will be making two Korean ‘Jesa’ (ancestral rites) dishes that are commonly prepared in Korean homes during this time of the year. Seollal is one of the big national holidays observed in Korea and families get together around food prep to make traditional ancestral rite dishes (braised beef, rice cake soup, all kinds of jeons, steamed and seasoned vegetables, fish etc) and in some homes these are presented as offerings to those who passed away. We selected two dishes that are easy to replicate at home: Japchae and five-colored skewer pancake (‘o saek kkochi jeon’). This is a sampling of the more elaborate Seollal home prepared dishes. But they are good for any culinary occasions! This class will be in English and animated by our popular culinary chef Nancy.
Date and Time : Friday, January 17th 2025 | 10:30 - 12:00
Location : Seorae Global Village Center (3F, 28, Seorae-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul)

On the Origin of Species by Kim Bo-Young
Award winning science fiction writer Kim Bo-Young*, takes us on a journey to reflect on a post-human existence through a collection of seven stories in "On the Origin of Species and Other Stories". We look at a spectrum of non-human beings to humans, all of whom are striving to survive through evolution, whether biologically, technologically or socially. Kim's offers some of the most rigorous and surprisingly poignant reflections on post-human existence being written today.
*If you watched the Korean scifi movie "The snowpiercer" by Bong Joon Ho, Kim Bo-Young worked as a consultant for the film. |

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
