DIY Upcycling Fabrics with EJ !
This month we will be handling used material derived from old traditional korean bedding material called "ibul". Our teacher EJ collects used fabrics to create artistic projects of different scales. At the Center, we will be making a place mat (or can be framed to look at) sewn from left over ibul material. These ibul were omnipresent in old times Korea before the shift to modern bedding. Fond childhood memories come to mind of going under these ibul heated on ondol floors in the far corner of my grandparents room. They were so heavy as they were purely made with cotton fillings but felt so warm underneath it that it felt like the safest spot to be on earth. Come join this soothing DYI atelier with EJ.

Human Acts by Han Kang
For this month of October, we have selected a novel ‘Human Acts’ by Han Kang who recently won a Novel Prize in literature. Human Acts is a poignant and haunting novel that delves into the aftermath of the Gwangju Uprising, a brutal military suppression of pro-democracy protests in South Korea in 1980. Through interconnected narratives, it explores the lives of various characters affected by the violence, including a young boy searching for his friend, an editor struggling with censorship, and survivors grappling with trauma and loss. Han Kang's lyrical yet stark prose captures the profound impacts of collective violence on individuals and society, offering a powerful reflection on humanity, memory, and resilience in the face of atrocity. |

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
