쥐불놀이(Jwibulnori) is a Korean game in which participants create streaks of light by swinging cans filled with burning items. The game is played on the eve of Daeboreum, first full moon of the year in the lunar calendar. It is played during the time when fires are started on farmlands to exterminate harmful insects and rodents by burning away their habitat. |

Korean Cooking Class
Menu of this month:
Lotus Leaf Rice & Tricolored Namul Salad
To go with the spirit of celebration for the Jeongwol Daeboreum, full moon of the first lunar month (this year it is falling on February 12), we are hosting our chef Nancy again to cook a simplified full moon dish. During this full moon day, traditionally, villages would be busy carrying out ancestral rites, animating traditional games, conducting fire shows involving burning rice straws, and making wishes to the full moon for prosperity and good farming yields. During this day, families prepare nutritious glutinous steamed rice mixed with multi grains and seasoned herbs that were hung dry during the winter months. This combination of ingredients was believed to awaken the sleeping immune system and rejuvenate our hibernating bodies. Come and join this cookery class to prepare our simple version involving lotus leaf.

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
