Korean Cooking Class🍴
Menu of this month : Ssambap (cabbage wrap rice) & Ssamjang (Korean dipping sauce)
Our culinary history involving wrapping ('Ssam') condiments with lettuce goes back to the Three Kingdoms period more than 2000 years ago. Under the Buddhist influence, wrapping a spoon of cooked rice with banchan in lettuce became popular and was even considered as a royal delicacy during the Joseon dynasty. There are several ways of eating Ssambap, the most popular way being using any kind of fresh large green leaves. During this month's culinary hour, you will learn the Ssambap using steamed cabbage leaves. Full of vitamin C, this is a popular and elegant version adequate during the hot summer months to bring back lost appetite.
You will also learn how to make Ssam-jang, the dipping sauce that you dot on top of you rice before wrapping. Although back then stuffing one's mouth with a baby fist size lettuce wrap was considered ill mannered today, a stuffed cheek with this wrap is considered normal and not to be self-conscious about. You can even make one wrap and stuff your loved one's mouth with it as a sign of affection!

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
