The Korean way of Tea To celebrate the National Tea Day of April 21st in Korea, we would like to offer to the curious foreign residents a hands-on lesson on the ritual of drinking tea. This ceremony has its roots in the 4th century when primarily Buddhist monks brought it from China. With the time passing, the art of drinking tea stayed in the seclusive life of practicing Buddhist monks or among high ranked royal officials. Today, considered as a high form of art, it is taught in cultural centers and specialized institutions. As we are living in this fast-paced modern society, we do not seem to have time to stop and contemplate on a cup of tea. Ms. Go will walk us through step-by-step on how to set up and carry out this Korean tea ritual for a meditative moment for yourself and your guests. Offered only to 6 committed participants. Must be foreign residents living in Seoul.
Date and Time: May 12th at 14:00pm Duration: 2 hours Cost to join: 10,000 won for your tea sample with email confirmation Location: Seorae Global Village Center (3F, 28, Seorae-ro, Seoul) In person workshop at the Seorae Global Village Center

Korean Cooking Class (offline)🍴 Menu of this month : Three types of 'Gimbap' - Vegetable/Tuna/Beef (김밥 세종류) and a side dish 'Danmuji muchim(단무지무침)' Gimbap(Kimbap) is a staple made from rolling seasoned cooked rice with your favorite ingredients such as vegetables, fish and meat with gim -dried sheets of seaweed- and served in bite-sized slices. As it can be easily eaten regardless of location, the dish is often part of a packed meal to be enjoyed at picnics and outdoor events, and often served as a light lunch along with danmuji(yellow pickled radish) and kimchi. Although Gimbap is a simple and portable meal, it has a perfect nutritional balance as in general it consists of rice, vegetables(carrot, spinach), egg and meat. You will also learn how to make a side dish, Danmujimuchim(seasoned yellow pickled radish), which is simple yet savory(not spicy!) that will stimulate your appetite. WHEN: Wednesday May 26th 2021 from 9:45 to 11:00am LOCATION: Seorae Global Village Center (3F, 28, Seorae-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul) FEE : 12,000 KRW WHO CAN JOIN: any adult living in Seoul as a foreign resident. Hanji literally means “the paper of Korea”. The main material is the fibrous skin from mulberry trees so it is a strong and long lasting material unlike the regular industrial paper. It is used in a variety of ways and has a different name according to its use. If it is glued on a door it is called a window paper, if used to inscribe written information it is called a family registry book. It is used to also make furniture such as a side night stand, a lamp or even a big chestbox. Join us every Thurdsay morning to discover this Korean traditional medium. You may choose from a variety of objects realizable with Hanji by consulting a catalog on display at the Seorae Global Center. Once you choose your item, we would need at least one week to prepare the starting kit. Material cost is paid in advance prior to the first class. Cash preferred for material fee. Class time is from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, every Thursday (except on public holiday) Space limited to 6 people in-person! The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
