The galette des rois (or King cake) is a cake traditionally shared at Epiphany, twelve nights after Christmas on January 6th. You probably remember the arrival scene of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem to encounter baby Jesus in biblical stories. Although the King Cake carries a Christian meaning it became over time a secularized tradition and appreciated by many as part of the Roman pagan tradition in France, Spain, Portugal and even across Latin America.
Today it is celebrated through the month of |
January and the cake comes in different shapes, sizes and flavors depending on geographic regions. For us here in Korea, we will be making the more common and traditional puff pastry version with frangipane, a cream made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs and sugar. This atelier will be animated as a talent donation by a French expatriate who will explain the meaning of this cherished tradition. For safety reason, almonds will be inserted as fève inside the cake and miniature objects packed randomly and separately for the children. There will also be crown decoration while waiting for the baking. All children regardless of visa status (Koreans and non-Koreans) can apply.

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
