Hanji literally means “the paper of Korea”. The main material is the fibrous skin from mulberry trees so it is a strong and long lasting material unlike the regular industrial paper. It is used in a variety of ways; it is used to make furniture such as a side night stand, a lamp or even a big chestbox.
Join us every Thursday morning to discover this Korean traditional medium. |
|
|
You may choose from a variety of objects realizable with Hanji by consulting a catalog on display at the center. Once you choose your item, we would need at least one week to prepare the starting kit. Material cost is paid in advance prior to the first class. |

Welcome to Hyunam-dong Bookshop by
Bo-Reum Hwang
For this month of October, we have selected a ‘feel good’ novel by young Korean author Bo-Reum Hwang. Today this novel is one of the bestselling books in Korea with publications in more than 20 foreign countries. Here is to one cozy evening with book lovers! In this novel, we enter the world of Yeongju who is burned out. With her high-flying career, demanding marriage, and busy life in Seoul, she knows she should feel successful, but all she feels is drained. Yet an abandoned dream nags at her, and in a leap of faith, she leaves her old life behind. After quitting her job and divorcing her husband, Yeongju moves to a small residential neighborhood outside the city, where she opens the Hyunam-dong Bookshop. I think we can all relate to the story to some extent! |

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue. You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries. Please visit our website for more information about what's happening this month. |
